Science & Society

"The climate crisis underscores the importance of popularizing science. Not only to generate interest in scientific careers, but also to assist decision-makers and to foster analytical thinking among the general population."

Popularization for participating in scientific progress

This action is mentioned in Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits." As scientists, our goal is to impact and transform the world — but it is our responsibility to communicate and elucidate how we bring about those changes.

Radio Podcast

La Lorraine des Sciences

A weekly science radio programme broadcast on ICI Lorraine, produced in partnership with the CNRS. Each episode — around 8 minutes — explores a current scientific topic in an accessible, conversational format, with no prior knowledge required. From December 2021 to June 2025, I co-hosted the programme as a regular contributor. I now take part through occasional guest appearances.

Popularization for fostering interest in science

Only a limited number of students aspire to become scientists, and even fewer express interest in materials science. This field remains unfamiliar — often perceived as outdated or not significant. Significant efforts must therefore be directed towards middle schools, high schools, and early university years.

🏫

Lycées (High Schools)

Annual visits to lycées in the Lorraine region — science demonstrations, Q&A sessions, and career guidance for students considering scientific studies.

📚

Collèges (Middle Schools)

Hands-on workshops adapted for collège audiences, focusing on everyday materials science — why metals rust, why ceramics are brittle, how your phone screen works.

🔑

Établissements Pénitentiaires

Science outreach in prisons and detention facilities, in partnership with the Université de Lorraine and the Ministère de la Justice — because curiosity knows no boundaries.

Other actions

Beyond the podcast and books, I regularly give public lectures, participate in science fairs, speak on the radio, and engage with schools, prisons, and the general public. A selection of these activities is listed below.

🎤

Invited Popularization Lectures

I regularly give public lectures on materials science for general audiences — at lycées, universities, science fairs, and cultural events, in France and abroad. These talks aim to make materials science accessible and inspiring, connecting everyday objects and global challenges to cutting-edge research.

📻

Radio & Press Interviews

I am regularly invited to speak on radio programmes and featured in the press. These appearances cover topics ranging from materials science and research careers to science popularization and my books.

📖

Book Fairs & Science Events

I participate in book fairs, science festivals, and public events to share my books and engage with a wide audience around science popularization.

🔑

Prison Outreach

I conduct science mediation sessions in prisons and detention facilities, in partnership with the Université de Lorraine and the Ministère de la Justice — because curiosity knows no boundaries.

Met'Hy — Student–Researcher Club

Met'Hy is a student-researcher club on metals for the hydrogen sector, born within the ORION (Oser la Recherche durant la formatION) programme at the Université de Lorraine. It brings together engineering students, PhD candidates, and researchers around concrete projects on hydrogen-compatible structural materials, combining hands-on experiments with outreach events.
